What is a Sump Pump?
Sump Pumps are used to remove water that accumulates in a sump pit. Sump pits are typically placed in basements or crawl spaces beneath a home. The purpose of sump pits is to collect water in one place and enable easy drainage to a different place, away from the home or building.
The sump pit is connected to the weeping tile system that usually runs the perimeter of the home. For that reason, it will be the first to fill with water, as the groundwater levels rise. If you are using an automatic pump (virtually everyone is these days) the pump will be activated and begin to pump the water outside of your property through the discharge pipe – away from your basement’s foundation. Once the water level recedes the pump will deactivate automatically.Maintenance for your sump pump required? Don’t wait any longer, contact us today!
Sump Pump Installation and Repairs
Sump pit installation will be the first step to installing a sump pump. We will need to dig a hole in the lowest spot of your basement floor or wherever water accumulates regularly. During the installation of the sump pit it is important that we do not jeopardize the basement foundation, so typically a sump bin will be placed away from the interior basement walls.
Once this hole has been dug out, we will install a sump pit or sump basin as they are sometimes referred to. The sump pit is a large plastic bin that allows the accumulation of water and houses the sump pump.
Like any equipment with moving parts, sump pumps will wear out over time and will need to be replaced. Since it’s dependant on how often the pump operates, there’s no general rule on how often a sump pump should be replaced.
It is important to test your sump pump regularly to make sure it will operate when the next big downpour occurs. Test it by pouring a bucket of water into the sump pit. The pump should turn on, remove the water from the pit and shut itself off in a matter of seconds.
Ejector pumps are located in your basement. It pumps sewage to an overhead sewer or septic field. It should have two pipes coming out of a sealed cover. One pipe is the pump discharge to the sewer and the second is a vent usually going out through the roof.
Backup Sump Pumps –Battery and Non-Battery/Electrical
Having a backup sump pump installed will ensure that your home doesn’t get flooded if your primary sump pump fails. Non-battery powered backup sump pumps connect directly to your home’s power grid. If the power should happen to go out, such as during a strong storm, a battery-powered backup sump pump will keep working to protect your basement. This will ensure that flooding doesn’t damage your home.Get in touch with us today! We can help you with all your sump pump needs!
